The Afghanistan vs India 1st T20I prediction? It is set to open a three-match series on September 13, 2026, with both teams heading to the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in Delhi.
India come into the series after a strong T20I run in Zimbabwe, where they won all three matches. Afghanistan, meanwhile, recently completed a successful ODI series against Ireland and will enter the contest with plenty of confidence and a strong spin-bowling group.
The first T20I should be particularly interesting because Afghanistan have named Ibrahim Zadran as their full-time T20I captain, while fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq returns to the squad after recovering from injury.

Afghanistan vs India 1st T20I Prediction
Our early prediction: India to win.
India enter the contest as the stronger side on paper, particularly because of their recent T20I form and the depth available across batting, spin and pace.
India won all three T20Is against Zimbabwe in July, winning the matches by seven wickets, 90 runs and 35 runs respectively.
Afghanistan should not be underestimated, however.
Their squad contains several experienced T20 players, including Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Azmatullah Omarzai, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Naveen-ul-Haq.
The key question will be whether Afghanistan’s spin attack can put enough pressure on India’s middle order and whether their top order can score quickly enough against India’s powerplay bowling.
Prediction
India win probability: Higher
Afghanistan win probability: Competitive outside chance
Predicted winner: India
This is an early match prediction rather than a final betting call. The assessment should be updated once the official India squad, playing XIs, toss and final pitch conditions are confirmed.
Why India Start as Favourites
India have several advantages going into the opening match.
First, their recent T20I results are encouraging. India completed a 3-0 series win over Zimbabwe in July, showing good balance between their batting and bowling units.
Second, India have considerable depth.
Their recent T20I squads have included explosive opening options, versatile middle-order players, quality all-rounders and multiple spin and pace combinations.
Third, the match is being played in Delhi.
While Afghanistan have experience playing their home fixtures in India, India are naturally familiar with the conditions and the venue.
That familiarity could become particularly important during the middle overs.
Afghanistan’s Biggest Strength: Spin
Afghanistan’s biggest advantage is likely to be their spin department.
The squad includes:
- Rashid Khan
- Noor Ahmad
- Mujeeb Ur Rahman
- Nangyal Kharoti
- Mohammad Nabi
That gives Afghanistan several different spin options rather than relying on one bowler.
Rashid Khan remains the obvious headline name, but Afghanistan’s strength comes from having multiple bowlers capable of operating during the middle overs.
If Afghanistan can restrict India’s scoring rate between overs 7 and 15, the contest could become much closer.
Afghanistan vs India Predicted Playing XI
Important: These are predicted combinations, not official playing XIs. The final teams should only be confirmed after the squads, team selections and toss.
India Predicted Playing XI
- Abhishek Sharma
- Sanju Samson (WK)
- Shreyas Iyer (C)
- Tilak Varma
- Ishan Kishan
- Shivam Dube
- Axar Patel
- Washington Sundar
- Ravi Bishnoi
- Arshdeep Singh
- Prince Yadav
India’s actual XI could change considerably once the September squad is officially announced.
The most interesting selection battles are likely to involve the opening combination, wicketkeeper position and the balance between additional batting and bowling options.
Afghanistan Predicted Playing XI
- Ibrahim Zadran (C)
- Rahmanullah Gurbaz (WK)
- Sediqullah Atal
- Azmatullah Omarzai
- Gulbadin Naib
- Mohammad Nabi
- Rashid Khan
- Noor Ahmad
- Fazalhaq Farooqi
- Naveen-ul-Haq
- Mujeeb Ur Rahman
Afghanistan’s official squad includes 15 players, with Ibrahim Zadran named captain and Naveen-ul-Haq returning following his recovery from injury.
Afghanistan Squad for India T20I Series
The Afghanistan Cricket Board has announced:
Ibrahim Zadran (captain), Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Noor Rahman, Sediqullah Atal, Darwish Rasooli, Azmatullah Omarzai, Gulbadin Naib, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Nangyal Kharoti, Noor Ahmad, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Fazalhaq Farooqi, Abdullah Ahmadzai and Naveen-ul-Haq.
The appointment of Ibrahim Zadran as full-time T20I captain is one of the major storylines heading into the series.
Ibrahim Zadran’s Leadership Will Be Important
This series represents Ibrahim Zadran’s first assignment as Afghanistan’s full-time T20I captain.
That creates an interesting challenge for the young leadership group.
Afghanistan have traditionally relied heavily on their experienced players during difficult phases, particularly Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi.
Zadran will now have to manage a team containing several high-profile T20 specialists while also making decisions around when to use Afghanistan’s large collection of spin options.
His batting will be equally important.
If Afghanistan’s top order can provide a fast start, the middle order can allow Rashid, Nabi and Omarzai to play more aggressively.
Naveen-ul-Haq Returns for Afghanistan
Naveen-ul-Haq is another major development before the series.
The fast bowler has returned after recovering from a stress fracture in his right shoulder. He was unavailable for Afghanistan’s T20I series against West Indies and the 2026 T20 World Cup.
His return gives Afghanistan another experienced option in the pace department alongside Fazalhaq Farooqi.
Against India, the ability to take wickets during the powerplay could be crucial.
Key Player to Watch: Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan will naturally be one of the biggest names to watch.
His importance goes beyond his bowling.
In a T20 match, Rashid can influence the game with:
- Middle-over wickets
- Economy-rate pressure
- Lower-order hitting
- Fielding
- Tactical experience
India’s batters will therefore need to avoid allowing Rashid to settle into a rhythm.
If India can attack Afghanistan’s other bowling options successfully, Rashid’s impact can be reduced.
If Afghanistan can use him when India’s key batters are at the crease, the match could shift quickly.
Key Player to Watch: Ibrahim Zadran
The Afghanistan captain will have additional responsibility because of his new leadership role.
His ability to build the innings while maintaining an acceptable T20 scoring rate could determine Afghanistan’s first-innings total.
A strong start from Zadran and Gurbaz would give Afghanistan the platform needed to unleash their middle-order hitters.
Key Players for India
India’s biggest advantage is their depth.
The team can potentially combine aggressive top-order batting with several all-round options and multiple spin choices.
Abhishek Sharma
Abhishek can change the game during the powerplay if he gets enough deliveries to attack.
Axar Patel
Axar provides India with balance because he can contribute with both bat and ball.
Washington Sundar
Washington’s ability to bowl in different phases makes him particularly useful against an Afghanistan batting order that could contain several right-handers.
Arshdeep Singh
India’s left-arm pace option can be especially valuable with the new ball and at the death.
Arun Jaitley Stadium Pitch Report
The Arun Jaitley Stadium has produced a mixture of batting and bowling conditions in T20 cricket.
Available venue data for the ground shows that teams chasing have historically had a strong record in T20 matches, with bowling-first sides winning more often in the referenced statistics. The same data shows an average first-innings score of around 166 and second-innings average of around 149.
That does not mean the same pattern will automatically repeat on September 13.
The actual pitch should be assessed closer to match day because surface preparation, weather and dew can influence the conditions.
What Could Help Batters?
The Delhi surface can offer opportunities for stroke-makers when the ball comes onto the bat.
Batters who rotate strike efficiently before attacking the shorter boundaries could be particularly effective.
What Could Help Bowlers?
Spinners may become important during the middle overs.
Pacers who vary their pace and use cutters effectively could also benefit if the surface becomes slower.
At night, dew could become an important factor and potentially make defending a total more difficult.
Toss Prediction
The toss could have a meaningful impact on this match.
If there is significant evening dew, the captain winning the toss may prefer to bowl first and chase.
However, the decision should depend on the actual pitch conditions on match day rather than following a fixed rule.
Early toss prediction: Bowling first could be the preferred option if dew is evident.
Afghanistan vs India Head-to-Head
India have historically held the advantage against Afghanistan in T20I cricket.
However, Afghanistan have developed significantly as a T20 side and possess players with extensive experience in franchise cricket around the world.
That makes this matchup more competitive than a simple ranking-based comparison might suggest.
The key battle will be India’s batting depth against Afghanistan’s spin-heavy bowling attack.
Afghanistan vs India Match Prediction: What Could Decide the Game?
1. Powerplay wickets
If Afghanistan lose early wickets, India could control the game quickly.
If Afghanistan’s openers survive, the match becomes much more competitive.
2. Rashid Khan vs India’s middle order
This could be the defining individual contest.
India will need to find ways to score without allowing Rashid to dictate the middle overs.
3. India’s powerplay batting
India’s ability to score quickly without losing wickets could put Afghanistan under pressure before their spinners enter the game.
4. Death overs
The final four overs could decide the match.
Both teams have players capable of producing a 40-run finish, making death bowling particularly important.
5. Dew and toss
Delhi’s evening conditions could influence whether defending or chasing becomes easier.

Afghanistan vs India 1st T20I: Final Prediction
India start as the early favourites for the first T20I.
Their recent T20I form, greater depth and familiarity with Indian conditions give them the edge.
But Afghanistan have enough quality to make this a competitive contest.
Rashid Khan, Ibrahim Zadran, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and the returning Naveen-ul-Haq give Afghanistan several players capable of changing the match.
Our early prediction: India to win Afghanistan vs India 1st T20I.
The prediction should be reassessed after the official India squad, final playing XIs and toss are announced.
